MOHS MICROGRAPHIC SURGERY: PROCEDURE, RECOVERY AND COSTS

One out of five people in the United States will develop skin cancer according to the Skin Care Foundation. Fortunately, there is a precise, safe, and effective surgical technique that leads with a 99 percent cure rate – Mohs micrographic surgery. The DermASAP team is happy to explain what can be expected throughout treatment from the procedure to recovery, as well as, the overall cost factors. We perform surgery in our comfortable, relaxing offices in Plymouth and Quincy.

PREPARING FOR THE PROCEDURE

We will work with you to ensure you are prepared for your procedure. It will be important to clear your schedule for the day; however, the procedure lasts less than four hours for many patients. We recommend dressing comfortably and bringing a book or magazine to help pass time when you are not in surgery.

DURING THE PROCEDURE

Before the procedure begins, we will administer local anesthesia until you are as comfortable as possible. Next, our Mohs Surgeon will remove the tissue and its surrounding margins one layer at a time. The doctor will examine the tissue under a microscope to determine if any cancer is present. This process will be repeated until the treatment area is cancer free. While the tissue is examined, you will be asked to wait in the waiting area until it is determined whether or not more surgery is necessary. For this reason, we recommend bringing a book or magazine to read. After surgery, we will repair the wound with sutures. In some cases, we will recommend our plastic, restorative, and cosmetic surgeon repair the wound to help you attain the desired aesthetic. We will provide post care instructions to ensure optimal recovery.

BREAKING DOWN THE COSTS

Utilizing the Mohs technique can be more cost effective than other treatments because usually one surgery is required. Other methods may require additional surgeries requiring separate costs. Many insurance plans cover Mohs micrographic surgery. We would be happy to talk with you about your payment options.
