Pregnancy or significant weight loss can leave women wanting to increase the fullness and projection of their breasts, as well as improve the balance of their figures. In addition some women are simply dissatisfied with the size of their natural breasts. Such patients may want to consider breast augmentation (augmentation mammaplasty), which involves using breast implants or fat to increase the size of the breasts or restore breast volume.

Consultations for breast augmentation can be scheduled at the Quincy office where Dr. Broderick can utilize the Mentor sizing system to help determine the increase in breast volume a patient desires. Patient should bring a sports bra and tight fitting t-shirt to the initial consultation. Find out more about breast augmentation and other services we offer at DermASAP below.

In general, breast augmentation is a surgery that enlarges the size of your breasts while achieving symmetry and proportion. The surgery usually involves placing implants either on top of or underneath the pectoral muscles for increased projection.

It is important to know severely drooping breasts cannot be corrected with breast augmentation. If you want your breasts to look fuller and to be lifted, a breast lift may be required in addition to breast augmentation; this can sometimes be done at the same time as your augmentation. Dr. Broderick will assist you in making the best decision for your individual case after speaking one-on-one during your initial consultation.

It is a common misconception that the only reason for breast augmentation is to increase the size of the breasts. However, there are a variety of reasons why someone may choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery, including:

Fixing asymmetrical breasts
Repairing breasts after pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
Creating proportion, sometimes after a change in weight
Reconstruction after injury or mastectomy
Correction after a previous surgery
Repairing abnormally formed breasts
Breast augmentation cannot be performed if your breasts are not fully developed, so the FDA requires that you be at least 18 years old for saline implants and 22 years old for silicone implants.
Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries in the United States. Ideal candidates for the procedure are physically healthy, have fully developed breasts, and have realistic procedure expectations.

Patients who seek breast augmentation are unhappy with breasts they believe are too small, or are dissatisfied with the breasts losing shape and volume after weight loss, aging, or pregnancy. They may also have asymmetrical breasts, elongated breasts, or breasts that failed to develop normally.

There are many different factors to consider when choosing implants. Dr. Broderick will go over each implant option during your consultation, explaining the pros and cons so you can make informed, educated decisions.

Size: Breast implants are measured in cubic centimeters. There is a large range of implant sizes; Dr. Broderick provides physical examples so you can get a more accurate depiction of your desired projection. The Mentor sizing system is also available.
Shape: Implants are either shaped like a teardrop for a more natural looking breast, or round for a perkier appearance. Dr. Broderick can help you decide the best shape for your body frame and anatomy.
Composition:Saline Implants: The outside shell of saline implants is made up of solid silicone. The shell is inflated with saline salt water solution after it has already been placed within the body. If a saline implant ruptures, the liquid is harmlessly absorbed into the body. You must be at least 18 years of age in order to receive a saline implant.
Silicone Implants: Silicone implants are made of a semi-solid gel similar in consistency to a gummy bear. Silicone implants were banned by the FDA in 1992 due to safety concerns, but reintroduced in 2006 after much research and testing. Some women report that silicone implants feel more natural, while others are concerned they may leak. You must be 22 years of age or older for silicone implants.
Texture: The exterior surface of round implants can either be smooth or textured. Smooth implants can rotate within the breast pocket, while a textured implant is supposed to remain in a fixed position. Teardrop-shaped implants have a textured surface, since the shape would create irregularities in the breast if moved.
Profile: Profile refers to the outward projection of the implant from the body. It is categorized as low, moderate, or high. Low profiles are often better suited for woman with wider frames, while higher profiles are more suited for narrow frames.
Breast augmentation is typically an outpatient procedure. You will be placed under general anesthesia during the procedure, so it is important that you make arrangements for somebody to drive you home after you are released from the recovery room.

The procedure itself is very straightforward and typically takes about one to two hours to perform. Incisions will be made in the predetermined locations, generally underneath the breast, where there is a natural crease. This is a popular incision spot because it allows for the greatest control in placing the implant and scarring is camouflaged.

The implants are then placed either behind or in front of the pectoral muscle in a pocket, which Dr. Broderick creates. She will make sure they are symmetrical and optimally placed, and once she is satisfied with the look the incisions are closed.

In some cases, patients may choose to have complementary surgeries at the time of their breast augmentation, depending on your desired results. One of the most common complementary procedures is a breast lift, which will help remedy breast sagging or excess skin that breast augmentation cannot fix by itself. By performing a breast lift with breast augmentation the resulting appearance is a full, perky bust.

Another popular procedure we offer at DermASAP is the Mommy Makeover, which includes a breast augmentation, breast lift, liposuction and a tummy tuck to help mother’s return to their pre-baby body. Dr. Broderick will be more than happy to answer all your questions about potential complementary procedures during your consultation.
Patients should plan on taking at least three to four days off from work after your surgery to allow for relaxation and recuperation. All breast augmentation patients will be equipped with bandages and a surgical bra to aid in the healing process and reduce swelling. This should be worn at all times, with the exception of while showering, for three weeks post-surgery. Sleeping with the head and back elevated will help reduce any postoperative swelling, which should subside quickly. Pain medication prescriptions will be provided to help ease any pain during this initial recovery period. Patients should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for four to six weeks. They should however perform simple arm motion exercises assigned by Dr. Broderick to ease the body into reaching full range of motion.

Follow-up appointments will be scheduled so that our team can confirm that you are healing properly. Depending on your procedure, Dr. Broderick will offer a customized recovery plan tailored to your needs.
It is important to evaluate your reasons for wanting the surgery, your expectations, and the desired outcome. You should come prepared to discuss any medical conditions, drug allergies, and previous medical treatments. Dr. Broderick will review your medical history and ask you about medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements you currently take. It is important to inform her of any alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. She will want to know about any family history of breast cancer and the results of any mammograms or previous biopsies. Dr. Broderick recommends bringing a sports bra and tight fitting t-shirt to the consultation.

At the consultation, Dr. Broderick will evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors. She will examine and measure your breasts and take detailed measurements of their size, shape, skin quality, and placement of your nipples and areolas. She can utilize the Mentor sizing system to determine the increase in breast volume you desire. Photographs will be taken and your options will be discussed. Then, Dr. Broderick will recommend a course of treatment. She will highlight the likely outcomes of surgery and any risks or potential complications to ensure you are completely informed about the procedure.
