Breast Augmentation Q & A

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery enlarges your breast size while achieving symmetry and proportion. Breast augmentation uses breast implants or fat to increase breast size or volume. During the surgery, implants are placed on top of or underneath the pectoral muscles for increased projection.

Why do people get breast augmentation?

There are many reasons for women to undergo breast augmentation surgery, including:

  • Fixing asymmetrical breasts
  • Repairing breasts after pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
  • Creating proportion, sometimes after a change in weight
  • Reconstruction after injury or mastectomy
  • Correction after a previous surgery
  • Repairing abnormally formed breasts

Breast augmentation can’t be performed if your breasts aren’t fully developed. The FDA requires that you be at least 18 years old for saline implants and 22 years old for silicone implants.

What happens during a breast augmentation consultation?

Dr. Genevieve Broderick at DermASAP recommends wearing a sports bra and tight fitting T-shirt to the consultation. She examines and measures your breasts, and takes detailed measurements of their size, shape, skin quality, and placement of your nipples and areolas. She utilizes the Mentor sizing system to determine the desired increase in breast volume. Dr. Broderick discusses different options for implants including:

  • Size
  • Shape
  • Composition
  • Texture
  • Profile

Then, Dr. Broderick recommends a course of treatment. She highlights surgery outcomes and fully informs you of potential complications.

What happens during a breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation takes about one to two hours to perform. Incisions are generally made underneath the breast, where there is a natural crease. This location allows for the greatest control in placing the implant and scarring is camouflaged.

The implants are placed either behind or in front of the pectoral muscle in a pocket. Once the implants are symmetrical and optimally placed, the incisions are closed.

What is the recovery process for breast augmentation surgery?

You should take three to four days to recover from your surgery. Dr. Broderick offers a customized recovery plan tailored to your needs. Common recommendations include:

  • Bandages and a surgical bra to reduce swelling
  • Sleeping with the head and back elevated
  • Pain medication to ease pain during the initial recovery period

Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor optimal recovery.
