What is Bellafill?
Most of the fillers you may be familiar with are made from hyaluronic acid (HA). As it is naturally present in the skin, joints, and eyes, HA is biocompatible. It is an attractive option for individuals who may be allergic to some synthetic or animal-based substances found in other types of fillers.
Bellafill® is 80 percent purified collagen gel and 20 percent microspheres (known as “PMMA”.)
Like hyaluronic acid, PMMA is biocompatible. It has been used in medical devices for more than 65 years, including as a replacement for the eye’s natural lens following cataract surgery. Bellafill® contains the numbing anesthetic lidocaine for added patient comfort.
How Bellafill Works
Treatments offer visible results after only one or two visits.
Bellafill uses PMMA and collagen to refill sunken facial areas, wrinkles, and fine lines. The injection plumps the area by lifting the skin to reach a surface that is in level with the rest of the face. Dr. Reed or Dr. Broderick will use an ultrafine needle to inject Bellafill into your desire areas.
The HA gel injected into the treatment area degrades and is eventually absorbed in about 6 to 12 months. As the effects wear off, you will need to revisit one of DermASAP’s conveniently located offices in Quincy or Plymouth to get maintenance treatments.
Bellafill can correct an array of cosmetic concerns. Whether you have one specific problem area or several, DermASAP will create an individualized procedure plan to give your face the fresh and youthful appeal you desire.
Frown lines appear when skin that is gathered between the brows when frowning creates a deep crease. These often give an angry appearance and don’t accurately reflect your mood or personality. For this specific area, patients find that Bellafill, along with Botox, gives a long lasting result.
Commonly due to aging, the area under the eyes can appear unhealthy and give you a tired, aged appearance. Bellafill will add volume to this area to make eyes look brighter and more awake.
Cheeks or Cheekbones
Similar to the under eye area, cheeks can sink in and give that ‘skeleton’ look, often associated with weight loss. Bellafill can be used to add volume to the cheekbones to give the face a more oval shape.
Bellafill offers a non-surgical solution for nose reshaping. Adding Bellafill to the nasal bridge can give it a structured and proportional form.
Bellafill can be injected into thin lips to make them appear more plump and full.
Vertical Lip Lines
Fine lines and creases along the lips are a common sign of aging. Treating this area can be combined with lip injections for an overall, smoother effect.
Smile Lines (Nasolabial Folds)
The nasolabial folds are one of the most commonly treated areas. Sometimes referred to as “smile lines” because of the repeated facial expressions associated with them, nasolabial folds can look worse as the body produces less of firming collagen with age. Habits such as tanning and smoking also accelerate the aging process.
Marionette Lines (Melomental Folds)
Opposite to the nasolabial folds, marionette lines are caused from continuous frowning. Overtime, the natural-forming creases begin to create more permanent marks. Bellafill can easily diminish this.
Chin dimples, also referred to as a cleft chin, can be filled in for a more even surface.
Scars from both acne and chickenpox often times appear as small craters. Adding Bellafill injections can smooth out the area to give the skin an even texture.
Are you a Potential Candidate?
Considered a lunchtime procedure, you don’t have to worry about taking a lot of time off work or your favorite activities. Side effects are modest and typically only include swelling, tenderness, or redness which will subside within one to seven days.
Before DermASAP moves forward with Bellafill® treatment, a skin test may be performed to check for collagen and lidocaine allergies. Even if it’s found that Bellafill won’t work for you, a number of other wrinkle and scar treatments are available to patients in the Greater Boston area.
How Many Doses Do I Need?
During your consultation, Dr. Reed or Dr. Broderick will determine how many doses of Bellafill will be necessary to get the results you are looking for. This will be based on the condition of your skin, the maturity of your wrinkles, the structure of your face, the depth of your acne scarring, and/or the areas you are wanting treated.
Most patients receive around 2 – 3 syringes per treatment area. Patients may need to visit DermASAP more than once, until their desired results have been achieved.
Before Your Treatment
Please arrive to your appointment fresh-faced, without makeup.
Prior to your procedure, Dr. Reed or Dr. Broderick will require a skin test to determine if you have an allergic reaction to Bellafill. If you do not, you may proceed with treatments. For a week prior to receiving Bellafill, avoid blood-thinning medications, vitamins and herbal supplements to avoid bruising. You may take Arnica (a homeopathic treatment for swelling and bruising) before your injections to help with the healing process.
The Treatment Process
When you arrive for your Bellafill treatment, Dr. Reed or Dr. Broderick will apply a numbing cream. The Bellafill injection will also have lidocaine, an anesthetic, to ensure a comfortable experience. Your doctor will then inject the dose of formula discussed in your consultation to your desired areas. This will be done through an ultrathin needle and will take about 10 to 15 minutes. After your treatment is complete, you are safe to return to regular activities.
Since Bellafill injections are a minimally invasive procedure, recovery time is short. Although you may be able to return to regular activities immediately following your treatment, some side effects may take up to a week to completely resolve. These would include bruising, swelling, redness, discoloration, or itching.
Dr. Reed or Dr. Broderick will discuss more in-depth recovery instructions based on your specific treatment plan during your consultation. If you have any questions or concerns following your Bellafill procedure, please feel free to contact us.
After a 30 to 60 minute treatment session, you will notice immediate improvement in the appearance of nasolabial folds, frown lines, and many other facial skin concerns. You owe immediate post-treatment results to Bellafill replenishing lost collagen. The collagen adds volume and lift to these sunken and wrinkled areas.
Results persist due to the other key ingredient: PMMA microspheres. Suspended in a gel-like solution, these beads stimulate the natural production of collagen. As the collagen wears off, you will still see results. PMMA stays in place to support the network of new collagen that gives skin a renewed firmness.
The results of Bellafill have been clinically proven to last five years; however, since PMMA does not degrade like other temporary substances in fillers do, results may last far longer. As a relatively new filler, additional tests with the passage of time may substantiate that Bellafill’s results exceed five years.
During your consultation with Dr. Reed or Dr. Broderick, you will be able to discuss all of your cosmetic concerns, desired areas of treatment, and any other questions or hesitations you may have. We want you to feel as educated and prepared as possible for your treatment. You will be asked about your health history, allergies, and any other prior procedures.
Your DermASAP doctor will thoroughly describe the Bellafill treatment process and show you before and after pictures of previous patient’s results.
If Bellafill seems like the right fit for you, you will be able to set up your appointment that day and you will be given detailed information on how to prepare for your procedure, along with a recovery plan. Please feel free to set up a consultation online.
We look forward to helping you find a younger-looking you.
