Psoriasis Q & A

What are the symptoms of psoriasis?

There are several types of psoriasis, each with unique symptoms. Your provider will take note of your symptoms to diagnose you with one or more forms if you have it. The most common are:

Plaque psoriasis

Plaque psoriasis, also known as psoriasis vulgaris, is the most common type. It is characterized by inflamed red skin patches that are often covered in white scales. The affected areas may burn or itch, and usually appear on your head, lower back, elbows, or knees.

Nail psoriasis

Roughly half of the patients with psoriasis have nail psoriasis which can appear alongside another type of psoriasis. It’s characterized by tender or painful fingernails that might separate from the nail bed. The condition is prone to developing fungus, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your symptoms.

Psoriasis arthritis

If you’re experiencing arthritis, or stiff joints, alongside your psoriasis, you may have psoriasis arthritis. Most patients who develop psoriasis arthritis have had psoriasis symptoms for over 10 years before developing resulting arthritis. Symptoms include stiff or painful joints after rest and warm or discolored joints.

Erythrodermic psoriasis

This is the least common type of psoriasis, but it’s very serious. Erythrodermic psoriasis can flare up over most or all of your body at the same time alongside a burning sensation. The rash may also peel, and your heart rate may speed up. If your erythrodermic psoriasis flares up, it’s important for you to seek medical attention immediately.
