Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Unlike other skin rejuvenation procedures, microneedling takes advantage of your body’s natural ability to heal itself. During the procedure, your provider will use the Derminator® digital device to create microscopic punctures in your skin with tiny, safe, medical-grade needles. These punctures promote collagen production in your cells. Collagen is a protein that your body makes with many purposes; one of which is to promote vitality and structure to your skin.

Before the procedure, your skin will need to be cleaned, and your doctor may apply a numbing cream to ensure that it isn’t uncomfortable. Most patients report that microneedling isn’t painful and that numbing cream isn’t necessary, but a low pain tolerance warrants an extra layer of protection.

Depending on your skin type, your doctor will apply serums and creams that your skin will absorb after the needling occurs. The entire process takes 45 minutes to an hour with no recovery time needed.

What can microneedling correct?

Microneedling can fix a variety of imperfections on your skin, and it isn’t limited to your face. You can opt for microneedling on any part of your body with a scar or blemish that you don’t want to see anymore. Imperfections that microneedling can reduce or fully eliminate include:

  • Discoloration
  • Dark spots
  • Large pores
  • Scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Fine lines
  • Acne scars

If you have a specific area that you think could benefit from a microneedling treatment, your doctor can help you to determine if it’s the best choice for you and if it will be effective for your needs.

Is microneedling safe?

Even though some patients are put off by needles, microneedling is generally a very safe and painless procedure. Side effects are rare, especially with the Derminator® digital device that nearly eliminates the chance of tearing and scarring. Possible side effects include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Bruising
  • Pigment irregularities

Nearly everyone is a good candidate for the procedure as long as their goals align with the intentions of the treatment. You’ll need to keep in mind that multiple treatments may be necessary for the best results while forming your treatment plan. If you experience any signs of infection in the weeks following a microneedling session, you’ll need to call DermASAP immediately.
