LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Seeking silky smooth skin without the hassle? Elite MPX laser hair removal at Integrated Dermatology is a quick, pain-free solution for permanently removing facial and body hair and achieving smooth skin.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Attaining hairless, smooth skin can be a real struggle. As many of us know, shaving, bleaching, and waxing can only achieve so much, with results only to be reversed not long after. Laser hair removal is a non-invasive treatment that uses pulsating light to permanently reduce and remove unwanted facial or body hair quickly and effectively. We are one of the few sites in New England who offers you the opportunity to receive this state-of-the-art technology at an affordable price under the supervision of an experienced physician.

At Integrated Dermatology, we are proud to offer two effective forms of light based hair removal, and will help you choose the recommended form of treatment during your initial free consultation. The Elite MPX offers a YAG laser and Alexandrite laser, which are suitable for the majority of patients seeking treatments. This laser features dynamic cooling, which freezes the skin immediately before the laser pulse, for a comfortable, effective treatment. Elite MPX is FDA approved, and has been shown successful in achieving permanent hair reduction.
HOW IT WORKS
Laser hair removal uses selective photothermolysis, which matches a certain light wavelength with a pulse duration to achieve optimal results for each individual patient. The device utilizes the light energy which is absorbed by the pigmentation in the hair follicles. Hair follicles that are in the active growth phase contain the most melanin, and therefore, absorb the light energy. The light energy damages the follicle, inhibiting its ability to grow. The hair in the damaged follicles falls out, leaving the patient with less hair and smoother skin.

Patients are encouraged to avoid bleaching, waxing, or plucking hair before their visit. Short stubble is all that is required. Patients should avoid tanning before and after their treatment to allow the skin to heal properly. Laser treatment is only done in our Quincy office.

ELITE MPX
Elite MPX is a revolutionary treatment offered by Cynosure’s specially designed laser hair removal system. It utilizes patented MultiPlex technology which combines the 1064nm YAG laser, 755nm Alexandrite laser, and optional Intensed Pulsed Light (IPL) in a single system. The laser wavelengths are used individually or sequentially to treat an array of hair removal cases as well as sun damage and pigmentation.

The YAG laser is greatly effective for patients with darker skin, the Alexandrite laser is optimal for fairer skin tones, but the two wavelengths used together can be used to treat all skin tones in the middle. The two can also be used simultaneously and customized to treat lighter and darker skin tones more accurately and effectively. Patients can choose to add IPL wavelengths to additionally treat pigmentation, spider veins, dyschromia, redness, and sun damage. Elite MPX allows for complete customization with the simple touch of a button.

HOW HAIR GROWS
Our hair comes from follicles located within the skin. Follicles do not grow hair continually, but rather in cycles. The rate of these cycles is different for each individual and for the type of hair. Hair on the head typically has a much longer active growth phase than hair on other areas of the body.

AREAS TREATED
Laser hair removal is most commonly used to treat:

Face

WHO SHOULD CONSIDER LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
Men and women who are considering laser hair removal wish to remove facial or body hair that is bothersome or causes self-consciousness.
These people may also be looking for a suitable and long lasting alternative to shaving, waxing, or bleaching. Potential laser hair removal candidates should ideally have light skin and dark hair, but Elite MPX can treat all skin types. Dr. Reed or Dr. Broderick will be able to determine candidacy after a consultation examination at one of our Massachusetts locations.

Laser hair removal candidates should be fully dedicated to completing their treatment plan, since it generally takes 4 – 7 treatments in 6 week intervals, give or take, to effectively remove hair in a given area. The amount of treatments can vary depending on patient’s hair type, treatment area, age, and gender.

TREATMENT PROCESS
We know what you may be thinking, “Does it really work?” The idea of getting rid of hair permanently is often thought of as “too good to be true” and is received with a level of skepticism. In order to understand how it is possible, it is important to explain how laser hair removal works.

Hair grows in phases and the laser works by targeting hair that is currently in the growth phase. The laser targets the follicle, which then absorbs the light, damaging it to the point of preventing regrowth. Several sessions are required to target all hair when it is in the growth phase. Most sessions are scheduled six weeks apart for maximum results. With each session, patients will begin to notice a decline in hair regrowth.
To begin, protective eyewear is provided to shield the eyes from the laser. Depending on the area of the body, treatment can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. The procedure is not painful, but some patients who have a low tolerance may request topical anesthetic. The Elite MPX device is adjusted to address your skin color and the thickness, location, and color of the hair being removed. Your laser hair removal specialist will then administer a test pulse, and if calibrated correctly to your specific case, the full treatment begins.

Gentle pulses of light energy are emitted from the handheld device. It passes through the skin without harming it, targets the pigmentation, and destroys the hair follicle. Each light pulse takes only a fraction of a second, and can cover the span of around 20mm. Your specialist will carefully maneuver the device to reach the whole area evenly. Once your treatment is complete, you will be offered cream or lotion to soothe the areas treated and help alleviate any discomfort. The treatment is not painful; it has been equated to a slight pinch or tingling, but numbing cream can rid this sensation.

The Elite MPX laser can only eliminate hair follicles in the active growth phase. This means that multiple treatments are necessary to achieve permanent hair reduction from the treated area. Patients should schedule several visits approximately six weeks apart to achieve the best results. Patients may experience slight swelling and redness to the area several hours after treatment. The hair treatment may take up to two weeks to exfoliate, before the hairs are shed.

RECOVERY / RESULTS
Immediately after your treatment, you can enjoy smooth skin and a noticeable reduction of hair in the treatment area.
You may notice redness and slight irritation of the treatment area, but this will diminish rapidly and you are able to immediately return to normal daily activities. Your doctor may give you specially formulated skin care products or a recommended skin care regime.

If mild discomfort is present, it can be relieved with acetaminophen. An ice pack or cold compress can be used on the treatment area for comfort, applied for ten minutes at a time every few hours as necessary. The treatment area should be showered with cool water only. Patients should also avoid tanning lights and sun exposure, applying sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when necessary. The treatment area should not be shaved within three days of treatment. If blistering occurs, patients should take the roofs off the blisters and should allow them to heal on their own. Any sign of infection warrants a call to Integrated Dermatology for further examination.

Laser hair removal is a permanent solution, so results are lasting. It will take several sessions to achieve results, and possibly a couple follow up treatments to ensure dormant follicles that weren’t active before are removed.
PRICE
The price of laser hair removal depends on the area being treated and the amount of treatments required to effectively get rid of facial/body hair. We strongly advise a free consultation with Shauna Eyster, our aesthetician in Quincy, Massachusetts to determine exactly what the costs of your treatment program will be.
